Gerhard Tröster[1] is associated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology[2] and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne[3] in the Textile-Integrated Sensing era. In 2006, his notable contribution is the Design and Characterization of Purely Textile Patch Antennas[4], which demonstrated fabric-embedded antennas enabling garment-integrated wireless sensing and connectivity. This line of work addressed critical integration challenges—durability, easy-care finishing, and antimicrobial considerations—that allowed isolated laboratory measurements to scale toward practical garment-level sensing in 2001–2007. This trajectory, shaped by Tröster[1], helped pave the way for wearable systems that blend sensing, communication, and durable serviceability.

Geometry-Driven Auxetics era

Hong Hu[1], affiliated with Northwestern University[3] and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences[4] in this era, helped shape geometry-driven textile concepts. His key contributions include advancing auxetic fabrics via the 2011 paper Development of auxetic fabrics using flat knitting technology[7], which demonstrated that negative Poisson's ratio textiles could be realized through flat knitting and created groundwork for scalable, geometry-driven production. Su Liu[2], active at Hunan University[5] and the University of Utah[6] during this era, contributed to expanding the design space of auxetic textiles. Self-Powered Wearable Fabrics era

Guangming Tao [1], with affiliations at Huazhong University of Science and Technology [3] and Donghua University [4], contributed the Hierarchical-morphology metafabric for scalable passive daytime radiative cooling [7]. This work demonstrated a scalable route to integrating energy management and passive radiative cooling in textiles, a foundational contribution for self-powered metafabrics in the 2015–2024 era. Conor J.
